Christo Mills from the group Still Wild Still Threatened
says the area is home to untouched old growth forests and should be
protected.

He says it will be difficult to remove all the protesters.
“A tree-sit has been erected perching a protester about 50 metes in
the air, and that’s been cabled off to about three machines that they
are using to push the road through the area,” he said.

Forestry Tasmania says it is preparing for an increase in protest action as
environmental groups jostle for publicity. Spokesman Ken Jeffreys says
the protesters are more concerned with collecting donations than
protecting forests.

“The Huon Valley Environment Centre has been swept
off its feet by the Still Threatened Still Wild group over the summer
period and what we’ll see over the next few weeks and few months is
increased activity as the Huon Valley Environment Centre tries to
reclaim its ground,” he said.
